Discoveryopt LHD-NV 3-12x42SFIR FFP – Lightweight Build, Serious Performance

The LHD series is Discoveryopt's Lightweight High-Definition line, designed specifically for hunters and sport shooters. The LHD-NV 3-12x42SFIR FFP is one of the most versatile members of this series: despite its compact size and relatively light construction, it offers optical and mechanical solutions that satisfy more demanding requirements.

First Focal Plane (FFP) Reticle

One of the most important features of this scope is the first focal plane reticle placement. This means that the reticle subtensions – the holdover and windage marks – scale proportionally with the image at every magnification level. Holdovers, wind corrections and target size estimation are therefore accurate not only at maximum magnification, but also at 3x, 6x or any intermediate setting. This is particularly important during variable-distance hunting or competitive shooting.

Optics and Image Quality

The 42 mm objective lens provides sufficient light-gathering surface to deliver a usable image in twilight conditions. The fully multi-coated HD lens system maximises light transmission and reduces reflections, resulting in a clear, high-contrast and colour-accurate image. Exit pupil diameter is 14.1 mm at 3x and 3.5 mm at 12x, allowing good light gathering even in lower-light environments.

Reticle Illumination

The centre of the reticle features 6-level adjustable red illumination. The partial illumination design – only the centre of the reticle lights up – minimises target obstruction while making the aiming point clearly visible. Each brightness level also includes an instant on/off function for quick switching. This solution is particularly useful during dawn and dusk hunts or in darker forest environments.

Side Parallax Adjustment

Parallax correction is handled by a knob on the left side of the scope, adjustable from 15 yards to infinity. The side-mounted placement is convenient because the shooter can make corrections without lowering the rifle from the shoulder or breaking the aiming position. This is especially useful on variable-distance terrain or in competitions requiring quick range changes.

Mechanics and Adjustment

Both elevation and windage adjustment ranges are 110 MOA, with a click value of 1/4 MOA. This provides sufficient travel even at longer ranges. The turret clicks are positive and clearly tactile. Eye relief ranges from 3.5 to 3.8 inches (89–96 mm), which is safe under recoil and allows sufficient freedom of movement when adjusting illumination and magnification.

Construction and Durability

The tube is machined from aircraft-grade aluminium alloy in a single-piece construction, providing a rigid and distortion-free body. The 30 mm tube diameter is compatible with a wide range of rings. The scope is nitrogen-purged and O-ring sealed, ensuring waterproof, fogproof and shockproof performance. Discoveryopt offers a lifetime warranty on the LHD series.

Who Is This Scope For?

The LHD-NV 3-12x42SFIR FFP is primarily suited to those looking for a reliable, lightweight and versatile FFP rifle scope for hunting – especially in woodland or mixed terrain where distances vary and lighting conditions are not always optimal. It is a great choice for small and medium game hunting, as well as for sport shooters who want to apply accurate holdovers out to 300–400 metres without investing in heavier, more expensive premium optics. It makes an excellent pairing with .308 Win and similar calibres.

What Do Users Say?

The LHD series is generally praised on international forums and in customer reviews for its outstanding value for money. Users most frequently highlight the clarity of the optics, the compact size and the reliable adjustment mechanics. Some note that at higher magnifications the eye box narrows, requiring more precise head positioning – this is a characteristic common to mid-range FFP scopes. Discoveryopt's customer service and warranty handling are also widely praised; issues are reportedly handled quickly and flexibly.
